For some of us, when we feel symptoms coming on of a cold, fever, sore throat, or runny nose, maybe itchy eyes, rashes, even indigestion and nausea, our initial reaction can be to grab for the easiest and quickest medication in our cabinet or from your local drug store. Not that this is a bad thing, however, most of our medications will often be made up of many different synthetic ingredients which can also be followed by adverse side effects, especially if we’re not sure how long it’s been sitting there (guilty!).
But when we start to use our own kitchen, fridge, and spice cabinet as our medicine cabinet, we can still have the same quick results without all the side effects with the help of natural ingredients provided by Mother Earth herself.
One of my favorite homemade creations to keep on hand for sore throats and that post-nasal drip feeling is Turmeric Honey. The honey helps burn off excess mucus and warms from the inside, the turmeric helps with inflammation and the black pepper increases the turmeric’s bioavailability. Eating it right off the spoon or mixing it into warm water is just the trick some of us didn’t know we were missing out on.
**Recipe: Turmeric Honey
½ Cup raw honey
1 Tbsp ground turmeric
1 tsp ground black pepper
Combine all 3 ingredients in a small glass bowl or jar and stir until a thick paste forms. Take a teaspoon up to a couple times a day or mix it into warm water. Store covered in a cool, dark place, this will keep for a couple months.
